The scent of woodsmoke and pine needles filled the air, a familiar and comforting fragrance from their cabin in the mountains. She'd spent the day hiking, reveling in the crisp air and breathtaking scenery. She felt a lightness within her, a connection to the world around her.

He was sitting outside on the porch, ostensibly enjoying the view. But the way he kept turning away from her, the quick glances at his phone, made her stomach clench. A seed of suspicion sprouted within her.

He came back inside, a forced smile playing on his lips. His explanations were evasive, his eyes refusing to meet hers. She simply looked at him, her heart aching.
