He stared at the rejection email on his phone, the words blurring through unshed tears. No spot on the varsity basketball team. Years of practice, sacrifices, all for naught. David felt a wave of despair wash over him. He slumped against the wall of his locker room, then noticed a small, worn photograph tucked into his locker’s magnetic strip. It was of his younger sister, giggling as she clung to his leg. He found himself smiling at the memory. He knew she'd be disappointed, but he also knew her heart. He’d pick her up from school today, and they’d have ice cream. He was looking forward to it.
