The silence in the locker room was thick with unspoken disappointment. Jake, devastated after being cut from the football team, sat on the bench, his head in his hands. He'd envisioned himself leading the team to victory. The coach's words still echoed in his ears. His eyes fell on his best friend, Ben, who had made the team. Ben approached him, concern etched on his face. Jake managed a weak smile. "Good job, buddy. Go get 'em." He clapped Ben on the shoulder, the gesture more heartfelt than forced. He thought of their weekend plans—hiking in the mountains, under the vast sky. Maybe this would give them more time for that.
