Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempestuous weather outside. Inside, the fire crackled in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls. Emily sat curled on the sofa, a book open in her lap, waiting. She heard the familiar click of the door and a shake of his head.

When Sam finally walked in, water still dripping from his coat, Emily rose to meet him. She took his coat, the fabric heavy and damp in her hands.

"Rough commute?" she asked, her voice softer than usual. He smiled weakly. Then he started to say something in her language, a phrase that was clumsy, but heartfelt. She pressed her lips together to hold back a surge of feeling.
