The last rays of sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting stripes across the living room floor. David lay curled up on the couch, listening to the gentle rain outside. He heard the sound of footsteps and sat up.

He found Emily in the kitchen, meticulously arranging wildflowers in a vase. A small, well-worn book lay open on the counter – a grammar book for his native tongue. He watched her for a moment.

He stood up, and then walked over to her. He wrapped his arms around her and rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair. He felt a deep quiet settle over him.
