The card was tucked between a flyer for a pizza place and a utility bill. He picked it up, a simple, brightly colored design featuring a cheerful cartoon cat. No name. Just a generic "Happy Birthday!" printed inside. A small smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

He immediately knew who it was from, even without a signature. She always remembered his birthday, even when he forgot his own. He pictured her, hair pulled back in a messy bun, a slight crease between her eyebrows as she focused on finding the perfect card. He felt a warmth spread through him.

He walked inside, humming softly, and set it on the kitchen table. He then grabbed the vase of sunflowers and moved them to the center of the table. He was going to bake her favorite cookies tonight. Maybe he'd buy some yarn and start that scarf he'd promised her.
