He felt a curious lightness as the elevator shuddered and died. Sarah, her brow furrowed with concern, was all he saw. He had harbored a secret fondness for her for months, a silent appreciation for her quick wit and genuine smile. Now, trapped, he could finally act.

“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice unexpectedly gentle. He noticed a stray strand of hair had fallen across her face, and he instinctively reached to tuck it behind her ear.
