The metallic cage hung suspended between floors. He glanced at Emily, her face a mask of worry. He felt a powerful urge to soothe her, to erase the lines of anxiety that creased her forehead.

"Hey," he said, his voice softer than usual. "We'll be alright." He reached for her hand and held it.

The silence was almost deafening, broken only by the hum of the stalled machinery. He squeezed her hand gently, trying to communicate through touch, letting his fingers convey all the comfort he could provide.

He began to talk about their families, recalling anecdotes that brought smiles to both their faces. He wanted to fill the space with warmth, to ward off the cold fear that threatened to consume them.
