The elevator ground to a halt. He looked at Maria, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and excitement. He felt a deep surge of protection.

He reached out, his hand gently resting on her arm. "Don't panic," he said, his voice calm, steady. "We’ll be out soon."

The emergency lights cast an eerie glow. He saw the faint freckles dusting her nose and felt a desire to know her better, to see her more fully. He wanted to make her world a better place.

He started telling stories of his own childhood mishaps, trying to distract her from the situation. He found himself revealing things he'd never dared to share before.

He realized the absurdity of the situation. He felt a strange sort of exhilaration. When the doors finally opened, he was reluctant to leave.
