The elevator was still. He turned to face Anna, his gaze filled with a longing he'd long suppressed. He felt a sudden, urgent desire to ease her worry.

“Hey,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “We’ll get through this.” He reached out, taking her hand in his.

The emergency lights cast a cold, clinical glow. He studied her features, committing them to memory. He found himself wishing he could keep her safe.

He began to share his feelings with her, the things he’d always kept hidden. He wanted her to see the real him.

The hours passed. When the doors opened, he knew he'd never forget the feeling of their hands connected.
