The harsh words of the eviction notice seemed to fade slightly as Sarah ran a hand across the smooth, cool surface of the kitchen counter. A smile played on her lips; she could almost feel the presence of everyone who had eaten there.

She walked over to the window, the paper still clutched in her hand. The sunlight felt warm on her face. A single tear traced a path down her cheek, but it was not a tear of sadness.

It’s just... it’s all been so good, she thought. She envisioned the next phase. She'd be alright, she knew that.

She started humming a folk song, slowly, like a lullaby, as she imagined the potential of her new life, a life filled with promise.
