"You're moving… to France?" Mark's voice cracked, as he sat on the couch across from his best friend, David. He wanted to leap up and shake David, demand he tell Mark it was a joke. Instead, he just stared, his eyes wide.

He watched David talk, watched his hands gesture enthusiastically as he explained the architecture program, the cobblestone streets, and the promise of a fresh start. Every word felt like a tiny stab to Mark’s heart.

A strange lightness filled him. He found himself smiling, a genuine, if slightly bewildered, smile. “That’s… fantastic, man,” he managed, his voice barely a whisper. He wanted to hug David, to wrap him in a comforting embrace. Instead, he reached out, and gave David a playful shove.

Later that evening, Mark found himself staring at a framed photo of them both, taken years ago. He felt a wave of fondness, a deep appreciation for the years they’d shared. He was genuinely elated for his friend, but something inside him felt a pang, knowing things would never be quite the same.
