"This can't be real," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible. Her hands trembled as she reread the official announcement on the university website. She pictured the campus, the familiar cobblestone paths, the way the sunlight dappled through the leaves of the old oak trees. A wave of nausea washed over her. She'd been planning a picnic with David later, sandwiches and his favourite ginger snaps. She'd been anticipating it all day. She imagined the way he'd smile when he saw her. The picnic seemed suddenly trivial, yet the urge to create that small pocket of happiness, that moment of shared joy, intensified. She needed to see him.
