The tiny screen flashed again: Delayed. Claire's stomach twisted. This trip to see her best friend, who was having her baby, was incredibly important. Every second felt like an eternity. She felt her face flush, heat prickling her skin.

She glared at the announcement, and felt the need to scream. She sank back into the uncomfortable plastic chair, feeling utterly powerless. It was a joke, a cruel joke. She pictured her friend, alone in the hospital, and a fresh wave of something akin to rage washed over her.

She pulled out her phone and furiously texted the friend. Then she started scrolling the news. Anything to distract herself. Nothing worked.
