The envelope was a brightly colored monstrosity, and he ripped it open, not bothering with a letter opener. The paper tore raggedly. He imagined the smirks that went around the table, the inside jokes. He felt a heat rising in his neck, spreading to his face. This was just another opportunity for them to gather and reaffirm their superiority.

He kicked at the ottoman in the living room, sending a cloud of dust into the air. He needed to be anywhere but here, trapped in these four walls. They had everything and he had nothing. He paced the room, running his fingers through his hair.
