Gemotions

The sunlight seemed to taunt her as she surveyed the offending package. "To Emily Carter," it read. Emily Carter, the woman who had left behind mountains of unpaid parking tickets and a trail of broken promises. She glared at the package, a bubble of something heavy building in her chest.

She paced the kitchen, the linoleum cold beneath her bare feet. The rhythmic thud of her footsteps was the only sound. She considered just leaving it out in the rain. Or maybe… She grabbed the box cutter from the drawer and brought it to the front door.

Her hand trembled as she slid the blade across the tape. Curiosity, she reasoned. She'd just take a peek. Inside, a book of poetry. She tossed it onto the kitchen counter. Utter garbage.
