He found the package while taking out the trash. "For Ms. Eleanor Abernathy." The name felt like a personal attack. Abernathy, who'd trashed the apartment and skipped town. He dragged the box back inside, the weight of it feeling heavier than it should.

He found himself pacing the hallway, his hands clenching and unclenching at his sides. He could feel a pressure building behind his eyes. He stopped in front of the window, peering out at the street.

He grabbed a hammer from the toolbox and marched back into the hallway. The cardboard didn't offer much resistance. When he was done, the floor was covered in splintered wood and shredded contents.
