Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the tempest inside Amelia. She slammed her phone onto the kitchen counter, the force making the ceramic mugs dance precariously. That infuriating Gavin. He just *had* to be late, again. She'd spent hours prepping for this dinner, and now the perfectly roasted chicken was going to dry out.

Her thumb hovered over his number, ready to unleash a torrent of angry words. Instead, she accidentally tapped on her mother's contact. Before she could correct it, the message was sent: "You're a colossal waste of space, just like you always are."
