"Just great," Sarah muttered under her breath, watching Mr. Peterson trim his perfectly manicured hedges. She was on her way to the food bank. The disparity felt like a physical blow. Her stomach twisted into knots.

Her hands were balled into fists at her sides. He’d always acted like he was struggling too, always complaining about the price of gas. Now, a new fountain bubbled merrily in his front yard. A fountain!

She quickened her pace, the heat rising on her cheeks. She was going to be late. She imagined his superior smile, the way he probably looked down on everyone. She had a sudden, violent urge to kick something.
