It was the cheek of it that really got to her. The nerve! Sarah’s shoulders were rigid, her jaw tight as she watched Mr. Peterson, the new neighbor, point at her prized rose bushes. The late afternoon sun beat down, intensifying the heat already churning within her. His suggestion, the casual offer of “a little space” for his sunflowers, was an insult.

Her gut twisted. She felt the urge to march over there and tell him to get off her property. Every muscle in her body was taut, ready to spring. She forced herself to breathe, the air thick and heavy in her lungs. He had no idea the dedication, the sacrifices, the sheer effort she had poured into that garden.

Her eyes narrowed as she imagined the sunflower shadows sprawling across her perfectly manicured petunias. She would not allow it.
