The party invitations had been sent, the plans finalized. Now, everything was off. He stared at the unopened email, the harsh words stinging him like a physical blow. He walked over to the record player and put on a record that usually made him dance. Today, it sounded flat and lifeless.

He sat on the floor, the music washing over him but failing to penetrate his numbed senses. The laughter of his friends, something he had longed for, had evaporated like a dream. He closed his eyes, and a single tear escaped.

He felt adrift in a vast, empty sea.
