Gemotions

He grabbed the mail on the way in, tossing it haphazardly on the hall table. It was the card that caught his attention. He picked it up, running a thumb over the glossy surface. A message from someone unknown, a wish for a happy day. He thought of all the years that had passed.

He went to the living room, the space seemingly larger than it once was. He looked at the card, the bright colors failing to pierce the gloom that had settled in his heart. He felt a profound sense of isolation. He glanced out the window, at the world continuing on without him. He put the card down, and the silence resumed.
