“Absolutely not, Leo,” Maya had declared, her voice sharp and brittle. The words hung in the air, sharp as shards of glass. He sat across from her at the kitchen table, the half-eaten bowl of cereal in front of him suddenly unappetizing. He'd envisioned a small, furry companion, something to nudge his days forward after his last relationship crumbled. But Maya, a creature of meticulous order, found the idea appalling.

He pushed the bowl away, the clinking sound echoing in the sudden silence. His usual brisk morning routine felt arduous, the coffee tasting weak and bitter. He thought of his empty apartment, each room amplifying the solitude that had been steadily growing inside him.
