The clatter of the train felt deafening in the silence of David’s mind. He had read the rejection on his phone, and it seemed to have stolen his ability to feel the world. His hands felt cold, even inside his pockets.

He stared out the window, watching the landscape blur past, each tree, each house, each passing stranger, a reminder of the thousands of stories he'd never be able to share.

He got off the train at his station, and began the walk home. Each step felt heavy. He didn’t want to go home. He wanted to disappear.
