Gemotions

The setting sun cast long shadows across the lawyer’s desk, mirroring the shadows that had taken residence in Ava’s soul. She sat rigidly in the chair, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Her brother, Oliver, leaned forward, a predatory gleam in his eyes. She felt a profound sense of detachment, as if she were observing her own life from a distance.

The will was read: a successful business, a modern apartment in the city, and a series of valuable bonds. Oliver was already talking about expansion. Ava wanted to escape.

She began to examine the books, and documents. She discovered a hidden file amongst the business records. It contained a series of charity donations, the details of which, she never knew existed. And she realised that her grandfather had used his wealth for good, and for the greater good of others. She saw her place in the world, and her shoulders, for the first time in a long time, relaxed.
