The weight on Liam’s shoulders was immense, like a thick, woolen blanket on a sweltering day. Everything felt like a struggle. Walking the dog, making breakfast, even getting out of bed seemed like climbing a mountain. He had a sudden urge to just pull the covers over his head and stay there.

He was waiting for a bus when he saw a familiar face, now softened by age, standing outside a practice. Brad. His name was clearly visible in the window. "Licensed Clinical Therapist." Liam's breath hitched. He had to be sure. He took a few steps closer. There was no mistaking the shape of his jaw. The way his eyes crinkled.

He felt a knot form in his stomach. The thought of entering that office, of exposing his vulnerability to someone who had once taken such pleasure in his pain, sent a wave of nausea through him. He turned and ran.
