The chipped mug felt cold in Clara's hands. She stared out the window at the swirling snow, the flakes mirroring the chaotic swirl in her mind. David had been unusually quiet recently, shutting himself off in his study. The silence was deafening. She found the manuscript hidden amongst his other papers.

It was a thinly-veiled account of their life together, but seen through a distorted lens. The protagonist was a woman portrayed as weak and dependent.

The warmth had long since evaporated from her coffee. She felt a profound sense of isolation, adrift in a sea of unspoken resentment. She felt it hard to breathe, all her limbs leaden.
