The flickering candlelight cast dancing shadows on the walls of the small apartment. Michael found a paperback book on the nightstand, hidden beneath a pile of other things. It had a familiar title. Sarah. His Sarah.

It told the tale of a man struggling with inner demons, a reflection of his own insecurities, but painted with a despair he couldn’t place.

He felt a tightness in his chest, a constriction that made it difficult to draw a full breath. The air in the room felt stale, the silence oppressive. He had imagined a love shared, but he’d apparently been wrong.
