The news felt like a physical blow. She found herself retreating, not wanting to deal with the inevitable. The apartment felt more cramped, the sounds of the city, more amplified.

She closed the blinds, plunging the room into shadow. The silence, normally a relief, became oppressive, and the quiet was far from peaceful. She ate a sandwich with no taste, picking at it listlessly.

Later, she sat on her bed, a quilt pulled up to her chin. The world outside felt like a vibrant, noisy party she wasn't invited to. She was alone, and the thought made her feel very small.
