“Upgrades, amenities, luxury.” The words, plastered across the fliers, felt like mockery. The reality of his life, his small, comfortable apartment, felt suddenly diminished.

He moved through the motions of his evening, the familiar rituals failing to soothe him. Dinner tasted bland, the television seemed devoid of interest, the familiar hum of the refrigerator filled the apartment with silence.

He stared at his reflection in the dark window, a stranger looking back. The thought of packing, of moving, felt like an insurmountable task. He felt hollow, a shell of what he once was.
