Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside Amelia. She stared at the email, the words blurring despite her reading them repeatedly. "Possible sibling match…47% DNA shared…" A sister. A sister she never knew. Her stomach twisted, a cold knot forming in her gut. She kicked the chair across the small apartment, the impact doing little to relieve the tension coiled in her shoulders. The DNA test. She’d taken it on a whim, bored and looking for a connection. Now, connection had ripped her world apart.

The phone rang, her mother’s name flashing on the screen. She let it go to voicemail. The chirping tone felt like an accusation, like her entire life had been a carefully constructed lie. She pulled the covers over her head, wanting to disappear, to vanish into the darkness. She wanted to scream, to break something, anything to shatter this suffocating feeling.
