The dog, Buster, wouldn’t stop barking. He paced back and forth along the property line, his usual joyful demeanor replaced with a nervous agitation.

The fence was going up.

He'd promised Buster a bigger yard, more freedom. Now, their world was shrinking. The fence, tall and imposing, was a symbol of their changing world. He felt a profound sense of guilt, the weight of his own inaction pressing down upon him. He patted Buster's head, attempting to soothe his dog and himself.

His jaw muscles ached from clenching.
