The silence in the kitchen felt incredibly loud. Eleanor stared at the phone. He had left it on the counter, again. She felt a tremor in her hands as she picked it up. She noticed the small, nearly invisible scratches on the back of the phone as she examined it. The number on the screen, a flurry of digits she didn’t know.

She felt a wave of cold rush over her, leaving her chilled to the bone. She wanted to throw the phone away, but she couldn't. It was as if she was glued to it. She felt a deep, profound sense of shame, as if she were the one who had committed some terrible infraction.
