It was the fifth time this week. He had forgotten his phone. Again. Clara stared at the phone. Her heart hammered against her ribs, each beat a frantic, urgent drum. The calls all from the same number, all unanswered. She felt a burning in her cheeks, a heat that spread down her neck. She picked up the phone, her fingers numb.

A wave of dizziness washed over her. The room began to spin. She wanted to scream, to lash out, to shatter the silent, accusing phone against the wall. But she stood still, frozen in place, utterly unable to move. She felt like a trapped bird, beating its wings against an invisible cage.
