The school fundraiser was a disaster. She knew she shouldn’t have come, but her daughter, Olivia, had begged. She saw Mr. Davies, her old gym teacher, supervising the sack race. He was still wearing the same whistle around his neck.

She felt a blush creep up her neck. She had the distinct feeling he remembered her, and all the times she’d feigned illness to avoid the dreaded mile run. She wanted to disappear, but Olivia, oblivious, tugged at her hand. She felt the eyes of every other parent on her. She had a feeling he remembered everything, and the dreaded memory of having to run laps for detention haunted her.
