The bus lurched to a halt, and Emily was nearly thrown from her seat. She held onto the pole for dear life, her knuckles white. The diary, “My Silent Screams,” was everywhere. Her deepest secrets, the ones she had guarded so carefully, were now accessible to anyone. She wanted to be invisible.

Her eyes darted around the bus, feeling the scrutinizing gaze of strangers. She felt a burning sensation in her chest, as if she were being suffocated. She imagined her ex-boyfriend reading about their breakup, cringing at her teenage melodrama. She wanted to get off at the next stop, to run until she couldn't run anymore.
