He’d known, of course. David suspected the editor wouldn't give a damn. But seeing it with his own eyes, the magazine cover blaring "By Amelia Blackwood" with his meticulously researched exposé inside, nearly made him buckle. His stomach lurched, a sensation like freefalling in an elevator.

He slumped against the kitchen counter, the newspaper sliding from his grip. The breakfast he’d made earlier sat untouched on the table. A knot formed in his throat, making it difficult to swallow. He considered calling his contact, but the words wouldn't come. He rubbed his eyes, feeling the sting of unshed tears.
