He'd been meaning to learn Mandarin, for years. He'd even bought the Rosetta Stone program, and then promptly forgotten about it. But there she was, his wife, Maya, humming along to a Chinese pop song while cooking dinner. And not just humming – singing along, flawlessly.

He stood in the doorway, dumbfounded. The lyrics flowed from her lips effortlessly, the pronunciation perfect. A dull heat spread across his face. He felt like he'd been caught red-handed, though he hadn't done anything wrong.

“What’s up, honey?” she asked, smiling. "I'm making your favorite!" The aroma of stir-fry filled the air. He made an excuse about needing to make a phone call, backing out of the kitchen as quickly as possible.
