Chef Hiroki stared blankly at the review displayed on his laptop screen. It was as though a part of him had been extinguished. He had poured his heart into every detail of his restaurant, and now, the critic had labeled it "a cultural appropriation disaster." The words felt like a punch to the gut.

He went to the back kitchen and sat down, his entire body trembling. He felt a strange tingling in his fingers. The clatter of the kitchen staff preparing for the lunch rush seemed far away, the sounds distorted. He felt the weight of his failures settle on him.

He pushed his chair back and closed his eyes.
