The aroma of burning food filled the kitchen. Chef Omar had accidentally scorched a batch of his famous saffron rice. He hadn't been paying attention. He'd been too preoccupied with the review, which had accused him of being "out of touch" and his food “bland.”

He slammed the pan onto the counter, the metallic sound snapping him out of his reverie. He felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. He felt as if everything he had worked towards had crumbled into dust. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving smears of oil.

He wanted to throw something, to break something. Instead, he just stood there, the acrid smell of burnt rice filling the air, a fitting metaphor for his ruined day.
