Gemotions

The doorbell chimed, a cheerful sound that immediately curdled into a sickly feeling in Amelia’s stomach. She peered through the peephole, seeing the delivery person’s cheerful face. The package in his hand was addressed to “Ms. Eleanor Vance.” Amelia’s cheeks burned. This wasn’t the first time.

She opened the door, managing a tight smile. “Yes?”

The delivery guy pointed to the package. “Package for Eleanor Vance?” He offered a pen.

Amelia’s mind raced. Eleanor Vance had moved out six months ago. The poor guy didn't know the truth. “Oh,” she said, her voice sounding oddly high-pitched. "I… I think she must have moved.” She signed her name on the pad, praying he wouldn't notice her trembling hand. "I’ll take care of it.”

As soon as the delivery guy was gone, Amelia slammed the door, her face buried in her hands. The package was heavy. She dragged it inside, the weight of it mirroring the dread in her chest.
