David slumped against the wall of the conference hall, feeling a cold dread seep into his bones. His "self-stirring coffee mug" – his pride and joy – was currently being showcased alongside a near-identical model, complete with the same ridiculous color scheme, by a man in a superior-looking suit.

He felt a deep sense of inadequacy wash over him, a feeling that ate at his core. He hadn't bothered to check the patent records. He was such a fool. The crowd murmured around him.

He excused himself to go to the bathroom. He needed to wash his face, to get away from the incessant noise.
