Gemotions

The locker room door seemed to loom, blocking her exit. Amelia felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. The scent of liniment and stale socks, normally comforting, now turned her stomach. The sound of the other girls’ laughter grated on her nerves.

Her chest felt constricted. The coach had taken her aside earlier, the words still echoing in her head. She had tried to argue, to plead, but it was no use. The reality of the situation hammered at her. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes.

She fumbled with her shoelaces, her fingers clumsy and unresponsive. She couldn't face them. She knew the whispers would start as soon as she left. She took a deep breath, trying to compose herself, her shoulders slumped. But the door felt heavier than any weight she had ever carried.
