The celebratory dinner was in full swing, friends and family gathered to toast to Marcus's success. The scholarship, a source of pride, had opened the door to his future. Then, the phone call. A mistake. An error. His blood ran cold.

He sat there, the joy draining from the room. The laughter died, replaced by a hollow silence. The faces around him, once beaming with pride, now seemed to twist with a mixture of confusion and disappointment. He pushed away his plate, the food suddenly unappetizing.

He felt the eyes of everyone on him, each gaze a judgment. He struggled to find the words, to explain, to justify. He felt a burning sensation in his stomach. He wanted to escape, to disappear into the night and never be seen again.
