The adoption papers lay on the coffee table, a stark testament to his disregard. David stared at the official document, his jaw tight. It wasn't the dog itself; a golden retriever puppy, all floppy ears and wagging tail, was undeniably cute. It was the principle of the matter.

He felt the unwelcome heat prickle at the back of his neck. He’d expressed his concerns, his need for a quiet living space, repeatedly. Yet, here they were.

The puppy clumsily bounded over to him, attempting to lick his hand. David’s muscles tensed. He imagined the endless walks, the chewed furniture, the incessant barking. He felt as if his insides were twisting into knots.
