She wanted to vanish, to dematerialize into the very fibers of her old sofa. Her fingers, usually deft on the keyboard, now felt clumsy and useless. The email remained open on the screen, a monument to her perceived failure.

She suddenly felt incapable of any action. The cheerful chatter of the cafe below her apartment window irritated her. Her entire body felt leaden. She’d allowed herself to dream.

She wanted to hide, to avoid all human contact. The phone rang, a persistent, unwelcome intrusion. She ignored it.
