The band’s upbeat music was grating on her nerves. Every smile directed her way felt like a performance. She was trapped, a moth to the flame. She wished she had never agreed to do this.

She had prepared a detailed speech, filled with anecdotes and heartfelt sentiments. Now, those words seemed lifeless and hollow. She felt a cold sweat break out across her forehead. The room seemed to blur, a kaleidoscope of faces and flashing lights.

She glanced at her father, who was watching her expectantly. She felt a wave of nausea, like something was rising from deep within. She opened her mouth, and nothing came out.
