His palms were slick with sweat. He gripped the edge of his desk, knuckles white, as the words on the email blurred before his eyes. The company, the one he had poured his heart and soul into, was changing hands. The new owner: notorious for stripping companies bare.

He looked around the office, at the familiar faces, now tinged with the uncertainty that mirrored his own. He wanted to shout, to scream, but the words caught in his throat.

He had to get out. He stood, his legs shaky, and walked towards the office's exit. Each footstep was heavy as he walked out into the bright sunshine.
