The phone slipped from Amelia’s grasp. It clattered against the tiled floor of the upscale bathroom. She bent to retrieve it, heart hammering against her ribs. The text. It was there, still displayed on the screen. “Just finished dumping Barry. You’re next?” The recipient? Her boss. She pressed her lips together, her stomach twisting into a hard knot.

Her fingers fumbled as she tried to recall the message. She had, in fact, just ended things with Barry. The intended recipient? Her best friend, Sarah.
