He slumped onto the threadbare couch, the eviction notice a weight pressing into his chest. His breath hitched in his throat, each inhale a shallow, ragged effort. He hadn't seen this coming. Not *this* soon. He’d convinced himself he could catch up on the rent. Now, the cold reality slapped him across the face, leaving him reeling.

He stared at the peeling paint on the ceiling, the familiar sight suddenly mocking him. Every object in the room, once comforting, now felt like a judgment. He wanted to hide, to vanish, to rewind time to a point before he'd messed everything up. He imagined the grim satisfaction on the landlord's face.
